The Baths

Just behind the theatre, the foundations of the baths have been excavated and “consolidated”. The presence of a small building (“atrium”) in front of the baths is evidence that this was a public building. Careful excavation (between 1977 and 1980) of the archaeological levels which, as luck would have it, remained intact at this spot show that the baths were built soon after the theatre but on a site which was already in use.

The same is true for the whole site, remains of the refuse from a slaughterhouse, a pottery and a silo as well as numerous dwellings, coins and fragments of pottery have been found.

Vandalism

The last two photos were taken at a few years interval, no further comment is necessary, alas !

The baths from top of theatre, atrium in foreground.

Hot air would have passed below the floors
Centre piece intact
Next time we visited, vandals had struck, but of the modern sort!
